Kitsch Encylopedia

Published by: Blonde Art Books

189 pages Edition of 1000 2014

£27.00

Kitsch Encyclopedia is a book project by Sara Cwynar of original and appropriated images and text, published with Blonde Art Books. Kitsch Encyclopedia is a book project that brings together writings by Milan Kundera, Roland Barthes and Jean Baudrillard, as well as my own writing to formulate a relationship of kitsch to images. Kundera considers kitsch to be a categorizing phenomenon: a means through which complex human experience is distilled to simple, sentimental motifs. All three writers discuss a similar circumstance of the contemporary image world: the way that our culture of images, especially in the age of the internet, provides an Idealized, kitsch-based image world that exists on top of the real world and in many ways has subsumed it. – Sara Cwynar

Frameworks

Published by: The Velvet Cell

28 pages 15 x 19 cm Paperback Colour Offset Edition of 300

£10.00

Across Europe one finds buildings that lie unfinished, some are skeletal in form and purpose. These concrete forms represent a stage in the architectural process that, in their case, may never be completed. Frames with nothing to support languish in their abandonment. Here we see architecture paused; construction has ceased and we are left with the bones of buildings in stasis.  The 19th century pioneers of reinforced concrete construction employed the technique in the classical language of architecture: as a frame comprised of pillars, beams and slabs. Methods have changed relatively little, a classical lineage therefore connects contemporary buildings with the ruins of Ancient Greece. The parallel is twofold. As each framework remains unfinished for economic or political reasons, they become modern ruins – evidence of an unsustainable need to build that belies our thirst for progress. Our failed constructions attest to a decline, putting the present into historical perspective by mirroring the remnants of old. Constructions that were never buildings are contemporary artefacts, slowly crumbling.

Every city could be said to have its own ‘score’, best discerned as we explore on foot. The structures in a city – buildings, highways, indeed all of the built environment – could be imaginatively coded as musical notes in a symphony of urban instruments which play a certain ‘tune’. City dwellers pick up the city’s tune and their inner world is changed. Ebb and flow, surge and slackening. Visually, we can receive from our own minds a corresponding image or series of images to accompany that aural experience.

Mother Nature

Published by: RVB Books

140 pages 13 x 21 cm Hardcover 2014

£23.00

As a way of continuing the work he started in Album Beauty, Erik Kessels brings us new artwork, based on his own collection of photographs. In Mother Nature, he assembles photographs of women posing in front of flowered spaces, which include flowerbeds in public and private gardens, fields and beyond. This universal theme, which he identified within his own photo collection, allows us to observe repetition and difference, which weave through yielding a common narrative. The book gives us the oportunity to move between places, times, generations and cultures. The individual stories and the foreign faces create a whole within which we see our common and immutable practices. In his book, Erik Kessels renders these private photographs visible anew, creating a visual anthropology of lived moments.
