Sebastien Capouet
Palimpsest

Published by: Théophile's Papers

56 pages 19.5 x 29.5 cm Softcover Edition of 500

£30.00

Sébastien Capouet’s Palimpsest gathers a body of photographs taken between 2011 and 2014, in parallel with the artist’s pictorial practice. This object-book induces, via playful folds and successive intervals, rhythmic gestures in the reader. The principle is that of the palimpsest, in which successive strata echo both the different layers enveloping the characters staged in the photographs, and the deserted landscapes – sites of memory – in which they evolve. Within Sébastien Capouet’s oeuvre, the body of photographic images presents itself as a transitory, liminal space, as a condition for the abstraction of the painted canvas. The chosen abstraction allows the artist to concentrate the attention of the spectator on the processes at play. These processes of effacement, in his paintings just as much as in his images/photographs, depend less on subtraction than on additions, superimpositions and saturations.

Bad Luck, Hot Rocks

Published by: The Ice Plant

144 pages 19 x 27 cm Softcover

£22.00

The Petrified Forest National Park in Northeast Arizona protects one of the largest deposits of petrified wood in the world. Despite stern warnings, visitors remove several tons of petrified wood from the park each year, often returning these rocks by mail (sometimes years later), accompanied by a"conscience letter." These letters often include stories of misfortune attributed directly to their theft: car troubles, cats with cancer, deaths of family members, etc. Some writers hope that by returning these stolen rocks, good fortune will return to their lives, while others simply apologize or ask forgiveness. "They are beautiful," reads one letter, "but I can't enjoy them. They weigh like a ton of bricks on my conscience. Sorry…" Bad Luck, Hot Rocks documents this ongoing phenomenon, combining a series of original photographs of these otherworldly "bad luck rocks" with dozens of facsimiles of intimate, oddly entertaining letters from the Park's archives.

Georgia

Published by: Little Brown Mushroom

48 pages 28.5 x 38 cm Newsprint

£22.00

Over two sweltering, bug-swarming weeks in July, the LBM Dispatch crew (superbly assisted by Stephen Milner and Brett Schenning) covered 2,400 miles in Georgia, exploring the State’s diverse landscapes, histories, and narratives that were alternately harrowing and inspiring.  From the Civil War to the last beleaguered Gullah Geechee community on Sapelo Island, the result is a sort of see-sawing time-lapse portrait of a region that continues to straddle the past and the present, and that seems to exist in a state of conflicted nostalgia and perpetual reconstruction. The LBM Dispatch is an irregularly published newspaper of the North American ramblings of photographer Alec Soth and writer Brad Zellar.

Kindling Quarterly is an exploration of fatherhood. Through essays, interviews, editorials, art, and photography, we highlight creative individuals whose work and lives are inseparable from their roles as parents. There is no shortage of familiar portrayals of dads in media, yet we aim to present a thoughtful dialogue about fatherhood that is missing from our cultural landscape. Men who are active caregivers are not a novelty and we do not depict them as such. While the subjects of our stories are fathers, each issue appeals to anyone interested in art, creativity, and community. Kindling Quarterly playfully assesses and celebrates the multitude of experiences that form contemporary fatherhood.

Victory Journal
Issue 8

Published by:

28 x 42 cm Softcover 2014

£11.00

In sports and in real life, there are heroes and villains, and there are the ever-changing shades of grey where hated rivals transform into figures of admiration. These fluctuations are at the heart of Victory Journal 8. From cover star, Liverpool FC forward Mario Balotelli, one of the Merseyside Derby’s most polarizing figures, to Henry Leutwyler’s previously unpublished photos of the icon Florence Griffith Joyner, to Jeff Maysh’s incredible tale of wrestler Ann Casey (aka Panther Girl) this issue is built on actions, reputations and myths. There are also reappraisals of bullfighting, Muay Thai boxing and the art of LeRoy Neiman, popularly condemned but historically undeniable. Victory 8 also features Lance Armstrong, Derek Jeter and the late Soviet hockey coach Viktor Tikhonov, because we also know that, with good, bad and ugly, there will always be absolutes.

Kaleidoscope
Issue 23

Published by:

28.7 x 22 cm Softcover 2015

£9.00

Welcome to Kaleidoscope’s #23 (Winter 2015). Following the recent, successful redesign by Bureau Mirko Borsche, we are back with a brand new issue. The new formula is taking shape, new columnists and contributors are joining our ranks, and a lot of enthusiastic research went into curating the most compelling content out there. At a time when feminism resurges both in critical discourse and media headlines, while at the same time entering a list of words overdue to be banned, our signature MAIN THEME section is devoted to a reconsideration of female identities and role models. POST WOMAN is composed of a think tank, a think piece by Natasha Stagg and five interviews, including with Juliana Huxtable (by Andrew Durbin), Amalia Ulman (by Francesca Gavin), Judith Bernstein (by Hanne Mugaas), Massimiliano Gioni on “La Mamma” (with Pietro Rigolo), and Girls Like Us (by Felix Burrichter). Lastly, the closing section of REGULARS features our insightful columns on the past, present and future of art and culture: PRODUCERS features Carson Chan's conversation with Ballistic Architecture Machine; in FUTURA 89+, Hans Ulrich Obrist and Simon Castets interview young artist Philipp Timischl; Andrey Bold questions Tokyo’s art scene as part of the PANORAMA series; in PIONEERS Fredi Fischli and Niels Olsen talk to cult Swiss designers Trix and Robert Haussmann; and in the first installment of RENAISSANCE MAN, Jeffrey Deitch celebrates the art of choreographer Karole Armitage.

Mike Slack
Pyramids

Published by: The Ice Plant

80 pages 18 x 23 cm Hardcover 2009

£20.00

Pyramids builds on the striking Polaroid aesthetic of Mike Slack's previous books,Ok Ok Ok (2002) and Scorpio (2006), rounding out a trilogy of stand-alone volumes that together contain 123 pictures. This collection records everyday details of what could be a recent past or a very near future—a dust storm in the desert, simple geometry, stairways and windows, schoolchildren on a field trip—quietly dramatic scenes energized by a sense of anticipation rather than nostalgia. Presented as physical artifacts of fictitious events to be deciphered by the viewer, the pictures also document the travels, observations and graphic fixations of the photographer, centering on a set of three identical early-70's office buildings (in Slack's hometown of Indianapolis), from which the book takes its title.

....a series of beautifully composed Polaroids taken by Mike Slack into a wordless trip around the country. Sequenced like a dream, the nameless places and close-up abstractions are anchored to no narrative, but relate to each other through their use of color. They belong to a different time, or maybe a different world...  —Printed Matter Mike Slack lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. His photographs have appeared in Harper's, GOOD, the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and Newsweek.
